Bottom-up Biology

multi compartment vesicles
synthetic cells , cell free expression

Bottom-up biology employs a bottom-up approach to create or mimic a biological process either to understand it or control it. The ultimate goal is to create 'Artificial or Synthetic cells' with life-like functionality. With accurate control of their functions and properties such 'artificial cells' may also serve as engineered material for applications in industry, health care.

In our Lab, we aim to build synthetic cells with multi-compartments for self-regulated communication. We will employ Giant unilamellar vesicles as building blocks and incorporate one component at a time to engineer a synthetic cell with specific functions including self-regulation.
